Flying monkeys or fallen angels?
The monkeys are demons. The use of the golden cap gimmick is akin to the genie in the lamp. Which is in itself a reimagining of the ancient pagan religions where one would utter an incantation to cojule or barter with a supernatural deity for favors. This differs from Christian prayer as that is a surrendering over to the will of a greater being rather than an attempt to use a supernatural entity as means to an end. The idea of a supernatural being tied to an object against its will and forced to serve the owner of said object is just a power fantasy.

Very old childhood memories
I remember my parents reading this to me when I was a very young kid in the mid 1980's. I remember they had multiple volumes of this story.

EPUB and MOBI versions hopeless
The EPUB and MOBI versions are not in a good state, probably should be rescinded. The many illustrations make this a challenging book to capture for most e-readers. I would like to create my own epub edition, but unfortunately, none of the full-page editions being offered for download appear to be in a lossess format. The compression artifacts on the color PDF are pretty terrible.
